The Scammers You Must Know.
Scam as it may seems has grown out of control probably in this part of the world this content is written from.
It is not really new to some people as they have been one way or the other get scammed and are familiar with the particular logic they used against him. However, more logic and patterns are out there that are unknown to the public of which people still get scammed with, here I will will list three of them which covers other smaller tricks they might want to use against you. Here is our logic for helping you avoid scams (special thanks to Kuda MicroFinance Bank for this content):
If you know scammers and how they operate, it'd be hard for them to scam you (I think that part is talking about me). Let get familiar (from a safe distance) with these common scammers who work harder than the devil.
1. The SMS Scammer.
Mode of Operation: Sends a text message (SMS) designed to look like it's from a bank with a link to steal account details.
Strengths: Clever, good at imitating banks, relentless, hard to trace.
Weakness: Spelling errors in the text message, the link in the message always looks strange (eg. nameofbank.agent.direct-link.com), the sender ID is usually a random phone number (instead of the bank's name).
What you should do!!: Don't tap the link. Just delete the message to be on the safer side.
2. The Ponzi Scammer.
Mode of Operation: Sells investment schemes that are too good to be true on various Social Media apps.
Strengths: Makes sweet promises, usually uses a familiar brand to look legitimate, creates a sense of urgency.
Weaknesses: The interest is always extreme (eg "Invest N2,000 to get N25,000 naira in 30 days!"), always too urgent (eg "Today is the last day to invest!!!"), usually doesn't and never have a physical office.
What you should do!: Don't reply or send money to the scammer. Block such number to avoid future occurrences and leave any Telegram or WhatsApp group that looks suspicious immediately (don't forget to block the admin to avoid direct messaging from them).
3. The Money Doubler.
Mode of Operation: Advertises money-doubling opportunities online - social media (WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook and forums like Nairaland etc) (eg. "invest N5,000 to get N10,000 in 45 minutes").
Mode of Operation: Knows how to appear legitimate (eg. "hacks social media account of someone on your friend list, contact and send you a private message), advises you to start with a small amount so you'll build trust, disappears quickly after receiving money.
Weaknesses: Never explains clearly how the money will be doubled, doesn't have an office address.
What you should do!!: Avoid anything that mentions money doubling online and offline. It's always a scam, even playing 2 odds pre-bet on betting websites takes 90 minutes (with some additional minutes) to settle, if you are lucky to win your bet.
